Saigon Restaurant

We've been meaning to get to Saigon on Lafayette Rd. for a long time. This past weekend, we made the trek to the west side to this little corner where 2 modest strip centers come together for a very rich ethnic culinary corner. We went into Saigon and, even though it was about 1:30, the place was hopping. We were ushered to a booth and given an EXPANSIVE menu. There are a lot of choices here. Some of them are on the carry-out menu that is partially pictured here (click the picture for a larger image). We were starving so we started with the appetizer sampler which gave us 2 each of appetizer offerings such as rocket shrimp, spring rolls, and crab rangoon. Then came the entrees. We chose the HU TIEU MI THAP CAM and the DO BIEN KHO TO. Don't worry, the menu has English explanations of the dishes and you can order by the item's number. These translate to rice & egg noodle with seafood and pork combination and seafood clay pot respectively. The noodle dish is a soup and it is a great choice for someone who can't make up their mind as to what they want because it has both kinds of noodles along with pork and seafood. They were very generous with the noodles. In short, it was delicious. Mrs. WYA! has a weakness for clay pot dishes and this one did not disappoint. A big pot full of shrimp, squid, broccoli, water chestnuts, cabbage and other veges in a delicious, but not overpowering, brown sauce was delivered to the table. Along with that comes a perfect mound of white rice to scoop it all over. It was wonderful and is a great introduction to the cuisine if you've not had Vietnamese food before. In summary, Saigon did not disappoint. We were even impressed with the ambiance. We don't usually expect much decor-wise in the ethnic restaurants that we love but it was lovely in Saigon with pretty maroon colored walls and matching blinds that stayed closed so that you could imagine that you were in Vietnam and not on Lafayette Rd. There is also an accompanying grocery right next to the restaurant so you will definitely want to take a look at it while you are there. Don't wait as long as we did- get to Saigon soon (however, not before July 16th because they are taking a holiday until then).

Thanks for putting this up! I was considering visiting here last week but haven't made it there yet--definitely on my to do list.

Oooh, yum! This one has been on my list for awhile too. I am now on a mission to try every local Vietnamese and Thai restaurant, since I've been to over half of them anyway. Have you thought about a WYA restaurant meetup night?

Wow, glad to hear that we aren't the last ones to try this great place. The restaurant meetup idea is VERY interesting Sarah. We're a little shy but we'll have to think about that. It would be great to get a group of people together to try these places that they might be hesitant to try (no friends who'll go with them to ethnic restaurants, need a nudge to try different foods, etc.). We really want to make sure that these places that make Indy unique stay in business so we like to champion them so people will give them a try.

I'm not too shy about meeting internet people in real life, after all, that's how I found my husband 8 years ago. We've both also met some lovely people in person that we first knew online, that are now just regular friends (not online friend).

I understand though, if you're feeling shy. Hope I didn't overstep any boundaries. :)

No, not at all. If we think that there is enough interest out there we would definitely would be up for it. Let us know WYA readers.

I'm glad you got to Saigon and liked it. This has been one of my family's favorite restaurants for some time. The Pho is as good as it gets. The owners are extremely nice and friendly and efficient. Prices are very reasonable.

I've done all kinds of internet meetups, so I'd probably be in.
