We fly out to New York City on Thursday for a long weekend. Any tips from those who have been there? This is our 4th trip in 3 years so we have some favorite places but will take suggestions. Nothing thrills us like a bargain so, understand that if you recommend Per Se or Le Bernardin, we probably won't go. However, if you have a favorite diner or street vendor...

First, make sure you hit up Brooklyn.
I think I prefer it to Manhattan as far as atmosphere goes.

Second, I had only one non-crappy diner experience. I genearally found bad coffee, bland food, etc. Here's the good one:

We must be kindred spirits Kevin. It is so funny that you mention Brooklyn because we always say that we need to explore that borough because Manhattan is getting a bit Disneyland-esque and full of chain stores and pricey restaurants. We hear that the bohemian artistic spirits and entrepreneurs have headed to Brooklyn for the lower rents. It is on our agenda to at least walk the Brooklyn Bridge and then maybe wander from there. Our next trip there though, we are thinking maybe we should just stay in Brooklyn.

Park Slope is bucolic. Williamsburg is fun (if maybe too cool for school). Greenpoint is, well, Polish. I haven't even scratched the surface of Brooklyn, but it's pretty awesome.

Whatever you do, DO NOT eat at the first place right at the end of the Brooklyn bridge. In fact, probably better to hang to the left down the stairs, than to follow the bridge to the right. I screwed that walk up.

This guide is really, really good: NFT

We didn't make it to that diner but we thought of you as we turned LEFT at the end of the Brooklyn Bridge. It was gorgeous down there.
